At the age of 16, Ilyin Kim faced a life -changing decision: Stay at home to finish high school in Chicago or go to Washington DC to find your dream of becoming a professional dancer. After spending summer in the Kerov Academy of Belle in DC, it was accepted in a year -long program and requested his parents to let him go. Although she had been training ballet for only two years, she jumped and left. Many jumps later, she is now a professional dancer, which balances her career with a growing list of creative acquisitions.
In childhood, Kim received serious training in the rhythm gymnastics, but to the eighth grade, she reached the highest level of the game and moved to the ballet. “I thought the ballets were the same, but I quickly found out that it was not true,” she said with a laugh. “In any case, I loved it, and it got stuck.”
After graduating from Kerov, he went to New York City to continue training. A year later, he obtained an apprentice contract with Universal Belle, bravely moved to Seoul, South Korea, only 19. After a season, she realized that she wanted to discover both dance and beyond.
Kim detected the University of Southern California's Gloria Kauf Main School of Dance, and was accepted. After graduating in 2023, she spent a year with Cincinnati Belle II before joining the Beltics, where she is now finishing her first season.
Beyond the company's life, he is in the hands of many artistic pursuit. It was recently accepted in the Counter Technic Teachers' training program, acting as a social media manager of Laguna Dance, teaching yoga, and taking side projects. Recently, a video art class at the Flashir Art Memorial.
On my year in South Korea
“Turn back, I had a beautiful experience in Korea. My mother migrated to the United States at the same age when I lived there, so in a way, it was [like living] On the contrary, I understand Korean culture from the point of being physically Korean. For my identity, I am very grateful that I lived there because it helped me understand things about my culture that I didn't do otherwise.
On deciding to go to college
“During my audition, I felt the same feeling of belonging to myself in Kerov – I knew that this was the place where I should have been. But even after being accepted, I struggled with this decision. When you are young, the choice feels huge, as it can change a great thing in my life.
“Sometimes, you have these really beautiful moments where you think, I don't know what I'm doing, but I know I'm here now. So, I spent a year in Korea and then left for LA.”
Lessons obtained from school
“In Kafman, I was fond of promoting solidarity, creativity and cooperation places. We were empowered to make our own paths. The preparations for shows and events were not an assignment. I just saw a need, or maybe creative desire, and went for it.
“Kafman also taught me what I wanted to know about – and that my curiosity is just starting. Now when I am in company life, I know what I want to find after that. If I had nothing else to create creatively, I think I was bored, and I was bored.”
Education on
“I like teaching. I am very debtor of teachers who believe in me, and I don't think teachers get enough reputation. My teachers – Stella Voskiteskia, Erin Force, Anton Wilson, and Judy Gates have given me the artist who I am.
“One of my favorite experiences in Cincinnati was teaching at the Cincinnati Belle Academy. I taught some of the choreography classes, and diving my students to choreography and finding my love for it – just as my teachers did for me – is surprisingly beneficial.”
Dream for the future
“I'm very excited to do a lot, but now, I'm happy to stay in the Beltics in Philadelphia. When you are young, you always move towards it, but now I am ready to stop, take everything inside and grow. I'm also looking forward to starting my anti -technological training and developing as a teacher.
“I have many dreams because I have a lot of interests. I do not know what is next, but I know it is there. I like to make things, prepare, create choreography and environment that collect people through art. I have all these seeds, and when time is right, I know that they are right.”
