Leicester town council set the limit of lap dancing clubs as 5

Limit of lap dancing clubs

Leicester town council set the limit of lap dancing clubs as 5 {the current number} but then has refused licenses for 3 existing clubs {Angels, Panache, and Baby Blue, left} because of their “location” does not fit in with some bizarre , invented, nonsensical rules {eg one is opposite a newly built University sports centre !}. These clubs will have to appeal or close by the 31st of March, I understand Angels has already done so. The other 2 clubs, Spearmint Rhino and Platinum Lace, have been granted licenses. In Newcastle meanwhile it looks like while the existing clubs will all get licenses the large number {up to 15 apparently } of pubs which traditionally feature strippers just on Newcastle United home games will be reportedly forced to stop.

As more of the new licenses come up for renewal in places like Consett , Portsmouth, and Doncaster local pressure groups are forming to oppose. However despite what Object’s press releases say I am not aware of any club that has had to close directly due to the new law as yet, the nearest was the Lodge in Oxford which has had to relocate. The councils that have introduced “nil” limits thus far have all had nil clubs anyway so the change has not been challenged.

New Baby Blue

The new “Baby Blue” in Deansgate , Manchester {mentioned in December’s column in the former Riley’s snooker club} actually opened just before Christmas although it apparently had an SEV but no planning permission. “Pink” in Windsor has been granted an SEV but must shut at a rather early 1am.  ”Cleopatra’s Lounge” is now the only club left in Huddersfield has relocated to the basement of the local casino. Attempts are being made to re-open “Shades” in Leamington despite the council’s opposition . Blackpool has granted 5 licenses and remains open to more though it is still the only place in the UK I know which is still topless only. Possibly because of Blackpool’s prudery Bournemouth has been named as the stag and hen party capital of the UK. Bristol looks like limiting the number of clubs in the city to 2 wheras now there are 4, expect lots of work for lawyers in the West Country during 2012 !

Male stripper

“Baby Platinum” in Leeds is up for sale.”Stilettos” Wigan’s only club has shut and is to be converted into a live music place. It seems that “Players” in Doncaster has shut down before applying for an SEV .

A BBC 3 documentary on lap dancing called “Table Dance Diaries” based on the Secrets chain was shown in January. An attempt to open a club in Dundee in the former “Mangos” nightclub has been turned down due to “fear it might increase crime” which rather flies in the face of most known facts on this subject. In fact “Platinum Lace” in Norwich was allowed to extend it’s opening hours in January after praise from the local Police.

Despite selling the Colnbrook club last month and all the SEV stuff boss John Gray of Spearmint Rhino has stated that he wants to expand in the UK by buying existing clubs.

the Wagon and HorsesThe legal battle between Messer’s Reddy and Sartori over the land outside the “Rocket” club in Birmingham {reported last year} looks set to restart with Reddy appealing the previous verdict. The long established strip pub the Wagon and Horses in Flamstead {left} has been refurbed and relaunched as “Junction 9 Exotic Dancers “ see www.junction9exoticdancers.co.uk the name coming from the M1 junction it is close to .

Tower Hamlets has still not fiddled the result of it’s consultation {which closed on October 17th } sufficiently to announce the results yet but local gay bar the “White Swan” which features male strippers has handed in a petition of 600 to be excluded.

Councillor suggests that lap dancing clubs could help town centre trade
