The council’s licensing committee said there are fears that any more strip clubs, particularly in the Broad Street and pub and club areas, would lead to the city getting a ‘sleazy’ reputation.
Licensing chiefs have imposed a cap of eight lap dancing clubs in Birmingham city centre – saying they will allow no more to open.
Four years ago the committee decided not to set a limit on sexual entertainment venues, but now opinions have changed and they have decided to draw a line at eight within the city centre ring road – the current number.
Previously there have been as many as 12 active strip club licenses in Birmingham – although not all businesses were active at the same time.
Public consultation over the policy has consistently shown that a majority of residents and businesses support a total ban on strip clubs – but defenders of the industry say gentlemen’s clubs are a key part of Birmingham’s business conference offer.
Cheltenham Borough Council Rejects Nil Limit For Sexual Entertainment Venues
In September, Cheltenham Borough Council licensing committee met to consider 174 responses to its consultation on whether there should be limits imposed on SEVs in the town. The responses were majorly in favour of a zero limit in each area (85%-90% indicating that named wards were not suitable for clubs), though there were slightly fewer opposing the idea of clubs in industrial areas (around 75%).
Despite this, the licensing committee resolved not to adopt a zero limit, but instead to suggest that venues will not be generally permitted in areas beyond the ‘core commercial area’, whereas applications in the town centre will be considered on a case by case basis.

Mr Laidlaw, who was born in the borough, said 50 jobs will be created as part of the venture, which he claims will offer a “high market” business compared to other venues in town.
Split over two floors, there will be pole dancing in the basement and VIP lap-dancing booths on the upper level.

Council urged to turn down the license of a lap dancing club in Bournemouth
A BOURNEMOUTH lap dancing club’s bid to renew its sex establishment licence has prompted a handful of objections.
For Your Eyes Only in Old Christchurch Road has applied to Bournemouth council to renew its licence for another 12 months.
But the application has sparked five objections from people urging councillors to turn it down.
The names and addresses of the objectors have not been made public by the council, but all are arguing that the club is in an unsuitable location, near to a synagogue and St Peter’s Church, and that there are too many sexual entertainment venues in the town.
