Spearmint’s successful appeal against VAT on the full price of a dance has been widely reported

Spearmint’s successful appeal against VAT on the full price of a dance has been widely reported but the effect of this is to make the dancers themselves liable for VAT if they exceed the £60k a year threshold. Whether this will prompt a major crackdown on the girls in the industry {as happened in the building trade 10 or 15 years ago} remains to be seen

Talking of Spearmint the prequel to the Candy Run in July featuring 100 exotic cars on a run starting at the old Millenium Dome ended at their Colnbrook club on April 11th.
Browns, London’s best known strip pub has been immortalised in oils by top artist Martin Yoeman who has done a series of portraits based on dancers from that esteemed establishment. A sample is on the right, I can’t remember ever seeing an easel in there so it must have all been done from memory!
Gerard Simi formerly of the Revue Bar has ended his association with Rembrandts { now converted into a conventional dance club} and has now opened the club Oops  in Alie St in the City as a restaurant and plans to introducer table dancing there in the 3rd week in May. Having run very successful Burlesque nights at Rembrandts he has also started up Burlesque classes see www.burlesquefactory.com based at the Drill Hall, Chenies St WC1 starting on May 9th .

David West, who you may remember had a short but disastrous spell running the old FYEO Mayfair as “Puss in boots”, paid £103k for a pair of tickets for the Beckham’s pre world cup party at a charity auction. In the end he did not actually go as the organisers had put lots of restrictions on him regarding his clothing {he has his own ..er unique style, left}, who he could speak to, etc so now he is currently suing the Beckham’s.

The widow of George Macdonald who died after an altercation with a bouncer at Stringfellow’s in late 2004 suing the club for damages. A new IT product called the “Clickcard” was launched at the venerable Sunset Strip late in March. Secret’s Euston club has added a plush new lounge called the “Salon Prive”, no news on the location of the chain’s 6th London club yet.

Lots of activity amongst the strip pubs this month first welcome news of a new pub “The Crown” High St, Knaphill, near Woking which has started having dancers supplied by Angels Exotic on Wednesday nights and Sunday lunch initially. Another Angels pub the “Victoria” in Hayes is expanding it’s striptease offering from May to every weekday, all day.

Talking of strip pubs I understand the venerable California in North Woolwich is finally closing for redevelopment on May 4th, the landlord though is opening a new strip pub nearby called the Royal Standard { right} in Albert Rd on the 14th . The White Horse, High Wycombe has a great new web sitewww.babewatchwycombe.com complete with details of who is on, including at the newly opened Bar 95. I understand the Lord Hill in Uxbridge has abandoned striptease but a new Entertease venue the Harp in East Peckham, Kent has started Friday strip shows.

The UK’s first topless cafe {as far as I am aware of anyway} has opened in Coventry see, it’s connected to the topless car wash nearby. A new club called “Privilege” has opened in Whitechapel Rd, Liverpool managed by Kimberley Anderson  who is also a conservative councillor in Cheshire.

The new club in the centre of Staines reported in last month’s column now has a web site though not much on it yet. Brighton council alarmed by a flood of new strip venues is lobbying the government to allow councils to ban clubs on moral grounds. Talking of Brighton the 2 long established topless clubs Pusscats and Top Totty {right}have applied for a full nude license.

The rush of other new club openings across the country continues. Alan Whitehead who has been involved in many clubs over the years is opening his own one called “Divas” in Gower St, Newquay on May 3rd. A new club called “SO53” has opened above a charity shop in Chandlers Ford, Southampton. The first club in Ware, Hertfordshire “Club Sky” has applied for a license. A new club called “Claudia’s” has opened in Central St, Blackpool and “Tap n Tin” in Chatham, Kent has started weekly strip nights on Tuesdays.

An application to open a 3rd club in Weymouth called “Banus” has been made withdrawn with the owner of the first “Goldfingers” creating mischief to try and discourage further competition. The 2nd club “Dusk” mentioned in last month’s column now has a license and still expects to open before the summer season. The former Rising Sun pub in Devizes, Wiltshire is being converted into a club called “Connections”. Bedford’s 2nd club “Crystals” opened at the end of April and is supplied by Promises who also supply a new pub called the Prince of Wales in Didcot with girls for regular Friday night lap dancing sessions.

A new on line lap dancing site has emerged  . Another new regular Burlesque night has started on the first Saturday of the month at the Korova Bar in Fleet St, Liverpool. Up and coming national rally driver Simon Harraway is sponsored by the Vamps club of Weston super Mare. The Secrets club in Middlesborough now has a web site
